Final Day to Enter 14th Canadian Schools of the Future Challenge! Here's Some Inspiration to Enter from Last Year's Winner, Melissa Burns, Educator, Archwood School, LRSD |
Dear Thought Leader,
1 Day to Go! 14th year, the Canadian Schools of the Future [Student] Innovation Challenge mission remains to inspire and share the awesome work by teachers across Canada who engage their students in new and innovative ways. We're not looking for you to recreate the wheel. You can enter an existing video, or nominate a video created by your students, or colleagues too!
It's been a whirlwind week with the contest coming to a close, exploring work and learning spaces in FL. Yesterday I traveled up to Washington DC where I was honoured to attend the National Coalition for Technology in Education and Training (NCTET) Gala Ball with colleagues in education and technology partners from across Canada and the United States. We have a lot to learn from this esteemed lobby organization. Stay tuned for more on how we might team up in the future!
Much of my professional learning comes from connecting with colleagues, some of whom I've known for 25 years as was the case at the NCTET Ball. The passion to make an impact overrides the money and other benefits. The theme around the conference panels prior to the gala focused on digital equity and security. Which reminds me of the C21 CIO Alliance national zoom meeting I curated recently, we have a number of audacious challenges in education to overcome such as supply chain issues, employee retention and escalating costs of technologies. In combination with the economic challenges, strategic partnerships have become more vital than ever before in school districts. Be innovative and be creative in your problem solving. We're happy to have that conversation with you whether you're in education or industry.
This coming week, I'm looking forward to participating in our first C21 CEO Academy Summit in Winnipeg where we will be exploring indigenizing education through truth and reconciliation. Watch for social media updates!
I hope you enjoy this month's Top 10 Canadian EdTech Report powered by MindShare Learning.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me and share your comments, success stories, news, research, and events with us! We love hearing from you! Feel free to call me directly at 416-569-2106, or drop me an email, if we can be of further support to your organization's innovation, or edtech growth plans through our strategic consulting services.
Thank you for the inspiration and kind feedback that motivates our team to provide you with mission critical research and insights to optimize your learning and technology strategy as we approach the end of the school year and critical planning for back to school.
Until next time, stay healthy & active and keep the digital learning curve steep!

Contrary to popular belief, ed tech did not begin with videos on the internet. The idea of technology that would allow students to "go at their own pace" did not originate in Silicon Valley. In Teaching Machines, education writer Audrey Watters offers a lively history of predigital educational technology, from Sidney Pressey's mechanized positive-reinforcement provider to B. F. Skinner's behaviorist bell-ringing box. Watters shows that these machines and the pedagogy that accompanied them sprang from ideas--bite-sized content, individualized instruction--that had legs and were later picked up by textbook publishers and early advocates for computerized learning.

2. Game-Based Learning Prepares K–12 Students for a Digital Future
edtechmagazine.com, May 11, 2022
As educators seek tools for online environments, one of the solutions they’re increasingly turning to is game-based learning. One of the best ways for students to learn is through play, and growing up in a digital world, they are already playing video games outside the classroom.
Bringing learning to students in a format with which they’re already familiar can help K–12 educators deliver important lessons. Video games can be used to teach students about the complex problems in the modern world, and they can teach students how to be better prepared for the future. |

3. Ontario school board putting learners first in digital-first era

The CDSBEO currently serves roughly 13,000 students in 39 schools in eight counties in Eastern Ontario, and employs approximately 1,400 staff and faculty. “In terms of size we’re not on the scale of, say, the Toronto District School Board,” said James Proulx, CIO at CDSBEO, “but 13,000 is still a lot of students – each with their own particular path and way of learning.”
Proulx said the CDSBEO’s focus on putting learners’ needs first has driven its adoption of the newest technology, which makes it easier to accommodate virtually any kind of learner. “In an age of differentiated learning, we’re always looking for ways to be progressive and proactive. Technology has been instrumental in making that happen.”

8.Multi-Cloud Storage Center Stage At Dell Technologies World
forbes.com: May 4, 2022
The battle between on-prem and public cloud infrastructure is over. That was the message that Michael Dell conveyed, kicking off the first in-person Dell Technologies World in three years. Who won that battle? The IT department did.
IT infrastructure is more expansive than it has ever been. Enterprise IT resources live on-prem. They also live in the cloud. And at the edge. It seems like data and compute are everywhere. Workloads can be placed where it makes the most sense. That's powerful flexibility for IT architects.
