Dear Thought Leader,

This past week I was honoured to attend and present at the Education Research & Development Institute (ERDI U.S.) in Baltimore as member of their Education Expert Network. It was truly an inspirational and collegial professional learning exercise where the learning was powerful throughout the two days I attended. I find the social learning as robust as the formal sessions where I connected with colleagues and expanded my network making new friends.

One of the highlights was meeting Dr. Dennis Peterson, who informed me that he recently retired after 52 years as superintendent of Minnetonka Public Schools. This puts Dr. Peterson in the 'Legend' category with an unparalleled record.  I asked the next obvious question, what was your secret to longevity and success?  "Each day I asked myself what I can do better," he declared. Stay tuned for a one-on-one MindShareTV podcast coming soon with Dr. Peterson.

Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Ferrari, CEO and her team for putting on an excellent ERDI Summer Institute.

Be sure to checkout our Inaugural InnovateHERS MindShareTV Podcast Series featuring edtech legends, co-authors Kathy Hurley and Dr. Barbara Kurshan, and Lisa Schmucki, founder & CEO EdWeb.

Below are 5 Tips I garnered from my summer professional learning conferences to date:

  1.  Embrace the growth mindset. What can I do better? Inspired by Dr. Peterson. How can we support teachers better to help kids thrive?
  2.  Balance your life. The majority of leaders I meet in education and industry lead a busy, but balanced life. The majority exercise or enjoy recreational activities that help keep them sharp. As we get back to in-person meetings and conferences. It's becoming more challenging as zooms continue to occupy excessive amounts of time. I always take my workout gear on the road and have had some memorable morning runs in some of the most beautiful regions of North America.
  3. Relationships and the power of your human networks matter. I had the good fortune of connecting with my long-time mentor, former colleague and friend, Kathy Hurley, who received the ERDI Distinctive Mentor Award for her relentless support of the education and technology sector. An unparalleled 'connector,' who has taught me being humble and always paying forward will create goodwill.
  4. Find the Joy in everything you do! I had the pleasure of connecting with fellow Canadian, Dean Shareski, on my way to ISTE recently at the airport. He is the author of Embracing the Culture of Joy. Apparently, my wife thinks I enjoy my life too much, so I must be doing a pretty good job at it!
  5. Embrace Courageous Leadership. The pandemic inspired many things, one of which is the ability to face fear head on. I continually remind myself of the threat of the 'Great Snapback,' a phrase coined by Dr. Steve Joordens, UofT psychology professor. We've made great strides to innovating education overcoming many barriers. Fear is the greatest inhibitor if we allow it. Embrace it and you will thrive!

4. ASU Prep Digital Teams Up With Google Public Sector to Develop Streaming Educational Curriculum With Universal Access
ottawasun.com, July 13, 2022
PHOENIX — ASU Prep Digital, an accredited online K-12 school offered through Arizona State University, has partnered with Google Public Sector, to make remote immersive learning technology more accessible to students across the United States and around the world. ASU Prep Learning Cloud is a streaming solution that empowers schools to deliver innovative and interactive 3D learning experiences to students using low-bandwidth devices. The technology was developed on and is powered by Google Cloud.

This new platform invites students to solve challenges by immersing themselves in interactive settings made possible by technology. For example, students can watch geologic formations emerge through simulations rather than reading about it in a textbook. Students can also explore human organs in 3D or examine a plastic mannequin. This brings topics like erosion, hydrolysis, and human anatomy to life.
